Why do I need 'Medical' Travel Insurance?

Most of us recognise the need to have travel insurance in place when we make for a holiday of a business trip abroad. We all know there is a chance of our luggage getting lost, our flight delayed or worse still, someone being taken ill on our dream holiday. So, we do all the right things and check out the best deals, make sure we have the cover we need and get ready for the off. However, did you know that even with travel insurance in place there are certain situations for which you will not be covered; in fact, should something happen, it may be that your insurance is rendered void. A good example is if your travel is specifically for medical reasons; for cosmetic procedures, elective surgery, IVF or dental treatment.

At Medical Travel Shield Australia, we provide a specialist medical travel insurance product that is intended specifically for those travelling abroad for medical procedures.

Here are how the two types of travel insurance differ:

Standard travel insurance will not pay out even for the common problems such as lost luggage or delay when a claim is made, if your trip was intended for a medical reason. At Medical Travel Shield, we cover customers not only for any of these typical problems during the trip, but also certain relevant issues linked to the procedure you have had.

In the event that your procedure has to be cancelled for circumstances beyond your control, you will be able to recover your costs up to the limits stated in the policy. Whether the consultant cannot perform surgery as planned because you are unable to travel due to illness, or your flight is cancelled and you miss your appointment, you will be able to recoup any irrecoverable payments for your treatment. Should you need emergency medical treatment connected with the procedure or surgery you have elected to have abroad, you will be covered for this too.

Even if something happens before you leave, such as bereavement, injury, or major home damage, specialist medical travel insurance will allow you to recover your costs. Your travelling companions can also benefit from the same medical travel cover, so if your trip is lengthened unexpectedly due to a longer than normal recovery period both you and your companion can stay in the destination country until it is recommended to travel home.
